Like any other industry, personal trainers charge a price that reflects their demand. A famous personal trainer with years of experience and a reputation of getting great results will undoubtedly earn more than a recent fitness graduate.
Why Do Personal Trainer Rates Vary So Much?
Generally, $40/hour is where you can expect to start for a recent graduate with next to no experience. A personal trainer with 2-3 years of experience typically charges $60 – $80/hour, with the median for the industry being about $75/hour. Well established trainers, especially those brought to fame by social media, show business or famous clients often charge $100+/hour. Often when you buy packages, individual training sessions can be discounted slightly.
Knowledge is another big factor at play here. Fitness qualifications are not all equal. Fitness Certifications achieved through more reputable providers such as AIF are generally more highly regarded. Trainers that have completed a short online course to receive their certification are unlikely to be very good. Moreover, some personal trainers have fitness degrees, and would have much more in-depth exercise, anatomy and physiology knowledge.
The prices above are reflective of an urban environment and are often slightly lower in a more rural setting.
Often personal trainers that work at gyms need to pay rent to the gym, and as such need to increase their prices slightly to retain their wages.

If you’re new to training or simply want to step up your fitness, the right personal trainer can make a huge difference. Exercise is more complicated than it seems and people with no fitness knowledge often make critical mistakes – leading to stagnation, faltering motivation and physical injury.
By investing in a personal trainer you are investing in your health, and if you think your health is not worth $40/week then I don’t know what to tell you. Prevention is always better than trying to fix chronic health conditions later in life, beside health insurance isn’t cheap.
The cost of a good personal trainer is justified, and can even save you money on medical costs in the long term.
A personal trainer gives you peace of mind that you’re doing everything correctly. Of course you’ll still need to put in the hard yards, but as long as you follow your trainers guidelines, you’ll hit all of your fitness goals in no time at all!
