There are many popular fitness classes out there. Most are get in get out type classes, where there is no continuity. Sure you’ll burn some calories, but they’re a chore. Often they’re repetitive, unspecific and the results will be mediocre at best.

HIIt fitness classes are a great way to burn up some calories, but often they’re a collation of the same burpees, mountain climbers and box jumps you’ve been doing for the past 2 years.

As a way to lose weight, they can be instrumental for those that want to jump in and jump out without any real commitment to their fitness – but for lasting enjoyment and progress, they may not be the best tool for ongoing behavioral change.

Strength classes again can have a purpose. They can be a great tool for beginners to learn some new exercises and gain some muscle mass. However, due to the fact that these classes are seldom tailored – there are often huge differences in ability.

There are only so many ways you can do a deadlift, squat or bench press. The only progress you will see will be the amount of plates on the bar – but often you will not have any improvements in functional strength to show for it – because training is specific. if you’re not training functional exercises than you will see minimal progress even if targeting the right muscles.

Why calisthenics?

 

Calisthenics on the other hand – is not just a way to stay fit. Fitness to calisthenics is an arbitrary byproduct. Calisthenics is a lifestyle – it’s a journey of self-improvement.

Calisthenics training is about learning how to move. The human body has almost limitless potential – and calisthenics helps us harness this potential– not only through strength but through balance, body-awareness and endurance.

The art takes the best elements of yoga, gymnastics, break dancing and other closely related disciplines to establish an extensive and almost limitless array of skills to be learned, mastered and altered to your own taste and style.

Calisthenics is self-expression more than it is a sport. It’s all about learning how your body moves and harnessing your strengths and working on your weaknesses.

Although a solid foundation needs to be set through body-weight training, skills become the primary means of training for most athletes.

Transitioning from basic pull ups and push ups into calisthenics training is natural and can be streamlined with the right coaching.
