Calisthenics Australia is the governing body behind what has traditionally been a sport of dance – incorporating elements of rhythmic gymnastics, performing arts and costumes. This type of calisthenics is female dominated, unsurprisingly. It has been around for some time, and is distinctly Australian.

Meanwhile around the world, Calisthenics has been ascribed to the Street Workout movement. This Calisthenics movement is far more widespread in Europe and the Americas, and is still finding its footing in Australia. Calisthenics Australia is slowly changing it’s meaning as street workout culture bombards the land down under.

Calisthenics in Australia is sometimes dubbed Calisthenics Street Workout to differentiate it from the rhythmic dance alternative. It’s heavily influenced by mens artistic gymnastics, break dance and street culture. Its practised in calisthenics parks and gyms.

Calisthenics Australia is taking a new turn, and one that’s welcomed by many.

The sport builds on the foundations of mens artistic gymnastics, but has many unique elements. It can roughly be divided into fundamentals, statics and freestyle. Fundamentals refers to the traditional body-weight style exercises that are designed to build strength and endurance. Statics are isometric holds that have pracitioners suspend themselves in various positions. Freestyle refers to momentum-based skills often performed on the high bar and parallel bars in sequences called calisthenics freestyle.
