2. NICA

Location: 39-59 Green St, Prahran VIC 3181

NICA is part of what used to be a Swineburn University campus. ‘NICA’ stands for the National Institute of Circus Arts. Although NICA is technically only a small part of the mega building dedicated to circus arts, the building also boasts the High Performance Centre (HPC) men’s artistic gymnastics gym, women’s artistic gymnastics gym and rhythmic gymnastics gym.

All of these collectively allow for an incredible conglomerate of different disciplines to congregate in one space. In addition to circus practitioners and gymnasts; breakdancers, acro yoga practitioners, trickers, martial artists, capoeira practitioners and calisthenics street workout athletes call NICA home.

Apart from the gymnastics apparatuses, there is also bodyweight equipment available such as resistance bands and massage balls, as well as basic weights.

The downside to this amazing conglomerate of gymnasiums is that they are very expensive to attend and the hours are set and cannot be changed due to a requirement for supervision.

3. Fitness First St Kilda

Location: 97 Alma Rd, St Kilda VIC 3182

Fitness First St Kilda is one of the best Fitness First gyms in Melbourne. Although it can be considered only medium sized, the gym offers 2 floors packed to the rafters with equipment. Iron is pumped, weights are slammed, and social butterflies circle in and out of classes.

It opens at 6am and closes at 10pm, which gives you a large window for training. This is a premium gym that comes with a premium price tag. Despite this, it still works out much cheaper than NICA.

The bottom floor is the ‘fucntional area’. It’s essentially a calisthenics playground with the addition of some boxes and barbells. This area is quite special as it has a very high ceiling which allows for muscle ups and other exercises that need a lot of space. There is also a class area on the bottom floor separate to this.

The top floor is dedicated to machines, free weights, cardio equipment and cages. The gym is also connected to King Swim, which is a relatively small pool.

South Pacific is another premium gym located on the St Kilda beach front. On the bottom floor you can the find the famous St Kilda sea bathes, which are a salt water pool, spa and sauna complex.

The gym is located upstairs and is separated into many different rooms. Although the entirety of the gym is quite large, the fact that it’s separated into many different rooms and relatively narrow corridors gives it somewhat of a claustrophobic feel.

This gym offers several premium exercise regiments that are completely unique, including hypobaric training room where participants are derived of oxygen to simulate high altitude training.
